PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment,  OECD  published their

2009 report on: Students On Line, Digital Technologies and Performance. here

Sample tasks: (user name: public, password: access) are already prepared reading materials with tasks for students, so  these may be a wealthy resource for teachers teaching English, Maths and Science.

The Summary of the outcomes, gives researchers, educators, policy makers data on the students performance in the various participating countries, and  among the many other conclusions, again emphasise the importance of the 21st century skills: collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, assessment and organization.

Collaboration  or working with others is an important part of the learning process, particularly within classrooms, networks and communities of practice. See how you and your students can collaborate to achieve success. The need for creativity and innovation in education has been highlighted as one of the most important developments needed in teaching and learning. Find out more about what that means. Critical thinking involves important skills such as reasoning, planning, critiquing and making judgments. Help your students develop these skills using these ideas. Assessment, finding ways to recognize, value, support and celebrate learning is at the heart of teaching. Discover innovative ways to assess your students. Organization is the range of practices that individuals and institutions use to represent, to order and to handle the experiences and expertise held within them. How can this impact learning? To learn more about 21st century skills, visit thePartnership for 21st Century Skills or use the Microsoft Innovative Teacher Toolkit with lesson plans where technology is included.

So if I was doing a research on students on line performance in my classroom, and my school I would first work with a team of teachers  to:

  • Prepare 5 units and  lesson plans where the objectives would be collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, assessment and organization.
  • Formative assessment instruments among which the rubrics, on rubistar would give the teachers,  the students and the researchers enough evidence to be analyzed later.
  • Design surveys for students and teachers before the research and after the research and on.
I will probably discuss this in the next post. too

I plan to further look at the PISA results, and see where Macedonia stands, in regards to all the other participating countries.
